With songs like 'Paint It, Black' and '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction', you can label the Rolling Stones as an iconic band. But there is so much more that makes this British rock band iconic. The exhibition The Rolling Stones - Unzipped at the Groninger Museum Museum showcases more than 400 original objects from the Stones' personal archives. Go on a journey through the band's fascinating 50-year history. From never-before-seen personal belongings, rare instruments, audiovisual footage, diaries, posters and record sleeves to stage design and fashion.
Impressive look behind the scenes
The exhibition has already been in London, Sydney, the United States and Asia. The latest stop will be made in Groningen. Unique pieces like Keith Richards' painted guitar can be admired there. He painted this Gibson Les Paul while awaiting his prison sentence. But iconic clothes worn by the band are also on display. With designers like Tommy Hilfiger and Anna Sui, these are true works of art. As icing on the cake, you can also see work by Andy Warhol at the Groninger Museum Museum: as he designed the cover for the album 'Sticky fingers'.
But there are also many personal and more intimate pieces from the Stones on display. For instance, you will find Richards' diary, giving you an insight into the guitarist's thoughts. Read about practice sessions, gigs and how much money the band made. Another detail not to be missed is the reconstruction of the flat in Edith Grove where the Stones lived. A house full of dirty dishes, dirty beds, leftover food and stubbed-out cigarettes. Don't expect glamour but Rock and Roll.
The Rolling Stones - Unzipped will be on display at the Groninger Museum Museum from 30 June 2023 to 21 January 2024.
