Looking for a special fabric or want to breathe new life into your clothes? At De Kleermaker in Oude Boteringestraat, nothing is too crazy. Jochem Schuitema is the man behind De Kleermaker, and the workshop is his second home. Let your creativity run wild, because this fabric artist will turn your ideas into reality.
Give your outfit a stylish twist
De Kleermaker is a lovely, atmospheric boutique on Oude Boteringestraat, where you can find fabrics, haberdashery and made-to-measure clothing. It’s a cosy spot where you can find plenty of inspiration. As you step inside, the most beautiful colours and patterns catch your eye. It’s a lovely place that evokes a sense of nostalgia. For instance, there’s a huge cupboard full of buttons in every colour imaginable. If you walk a little further through the beautifully pink-painted building, you’ll find Jochem’s workshop. Here, traditional craftsmanship is combined with modern technology.
From tailor to interior designer
The passionate Jochem is a master of his craft in everything to do with making and altering clothes. Originally from Groningen, he began his career by completing the Master Tailor’s Course in Amsterdam and has since worked on various projects with great love and passion. Do you have an unusual commission? The tailor never shies away from a challenge. It’s not just garments that are given a new lease of life here. Why not have a look round your home? Perhaps you’ve got a dusty cushion lying about that could do with a makeover.
Groningen is coming home
When Jochem had completed his Master’s degree in Tailoring in Amsterdam, he decided to return to Groningen. To him, Groningen feels like a warm blanket, a place where you know every street. Why run a business in Groningen when the capital is right on your doorstep? The answer is simple: “Groningen is a city where I feel at home with my business. It’s a place where you can still make customers happy with that one button or exactly the fabric they’re looking for.” De Kleermaker felt there was a lack of fabric shops in Groningen and was frustrated by this himself. After seeing the premises on Oude Boteringestraat, it was clear: this would be the place for De Kleermaker.
