Above water, you don't notice it. But did you know that the deeps are crawling with fish? They are like people. Some fish swear by the countryside, others feel like fish in water in the city. They enjoy swimming past warehouses, houseboats and the Groninger Museum Museum. During a game of urban fishing, meet these 'swimming city people'.

Above all, find a bridge
Want to come face to face with a city predator? Then look for a bridge. Pike, zander and perch like shade and are therefore often found under bridges. The many bridges make Groningen a very suitable city for fishing. In the city, you can fish not only from a boat, but also from the shore.
Predatory fish, whitefish and exotics!
As a predatory fisherman, you can expect perch, zander and pike in the city waters. "Today, we fish very fanatically for predatory fish, but you also have a lot of whitefish here including bream and roach. On Sundays, you sometimes see old men walking around the city with dough hoses and rods. Looking for a nice fishing spot. I think it's a beautiful sight," says fisherman Jan Willem. "Lately, predatory bleak have also been caught every now and then in the middle of the city. This is a species of fish that originated in the Danube, southern Germany. That makes Groningen an even more interesting fishing spot, with an exotic fish like that."
Don't forget your fishing card
Besides the city's diverse range of fish, Groningen offers even more advantages as a fishing city. If you need something quick for fishing, there are various specialist shops where you can go, such as Titus Blom's Hengelsport Groningen in the Astraat. Titus: "To fish in the Netherlands, you need a VISpas. You can register on the spot, and after paying you can immediately use your VISpas, which is valid for an entire calendar year. You can also order the VISpas online. A VISpas costs around 40 euros, which allows you to fish for a whole year. If you're only here for a weekend, you can also buy a day pass from me for a day's fishing. That costs 7.50."
