Bellowing gives way to music

What we now know as De Oosterpoort once started as Sociëteit De Harmonie, right in the city centre. Besides organising billiards and card nights, the society always had a focus on music. In 1888, the small concert hall was converted into a venue that became nationally famous for its acoustics and experience. During the war, a fire breaks out in the building and, due to overdue maintenance, it has to be replaced. The new place was found on the cattle market grounds in the De Oosterpoort district. The mooing of cows gave way to the tones of music. On 1 January 1974, the premises were officially opened.

NNO to Noorderslag

Since the early days of De Oosterpoort and its predecessors, it has been the permanent home of the North Netherlands Orchestra. They bring a diverse range of classical music to the venue. But lovers of other types of music also get their money's worth at de Oosterpoort. National and international artists regularly come to play the halls. The building also hosts various festivals. For instance, Noorderslag has been taking place here for years, america festival TakeRoot has been a fixture for a long time and there are new intiatives like MENA is here.

SPOT Groningen

The organisation behind De Oosterpoort and Stadsschouwburg is SPOT Groningen. SPOT is the largest theatre and concert organisation in the Northern Netherlands, serving everyone who loves the performing arts. From theatre to cabaret and from dance to music. With a strong and diverse offering, SPOT creates places to meet and places of significance with artists and audiences. In addition to its own branches, SPOT also organises events at other venues in the region. Among others, the Lutherse Kerk, the trotting track, the USVA, the Machine Factory and churches in the province pass by on the organisation's programme.
