Waterfall in the Woods at Houwingaham

To the south of Bad Nieuweschans lies the Bos op Houwingaham, managed by Staatsbosbeheer. It was created in 1998–1999 to combine water storage, new nature areas and recreation. The area consists of deciduous woodland, wetland areas and a lake connected to the Westerwoldse Aa.

Footpaths and a cycle path run through the forest from the Hamdijk to Bad Nieuweschans, partly over a dike and part of the LF 9 NAP route.

The name recalls the vanished medieval village of Houwingaham, which was once swallowed by the Dollard. During construction, even remnants of old houses emerged under a clay cover.
