Kluis/bedevaartkerk Warfhuizen

In 2001, Warfhuizen's old church was converted into a traditional hermitage with chapel. Since then, the church has been inhabited by an official Roman Catholic hermitage, which falls under the diocese of Groningen-Leeuwarden.

After a statue of the Virgin Mary was erected, an inexplicable influx of people began to visit Warfhuizen; they were clearly moved in a special way by the statue. The church gradually transformed into a place of pilgrimage and, over time, came to be recognised as such. The number of visitors continues to grow every year, and pilgrims are coming from ever further afield. Following the emergence of the pilgrimages, the church was given an opulent Baroque interior that is unique in the whole of the north. It would not look out of place in Austria or Italy. At the same time, parishioners of Sint-Jozefkathedraal in the town founded a Brotherhood of Our Lady to help the hermit welcome the pilgrims. The pilgrims come from all over the country (with, naturally, a large contingent from Limburg and Brabant), but also from Germany, Flanders, Wallonia and even Switzerland.
