't Hoeske van opoe Iet

A unique museum in the Netherlands: Museumhuisje 't Hoeske van opoe Iet. More than a quarter of a century of collecting has resulted in a unique collection of everyday life from long ago. To be precise, everything our ancestors used between 1735 and 1940–50.

Thousands of special collectables and museum pieces are housed in seven attractively decorated themed rooms. It is not only the collection that makes 't Hoeske van opoe Iet a rarity; the fact that the residents simply live amongst the collection also makes it special. It is, therefore, a genuine ‘living-room museum’, not to be confused with small home-based museums.

Collection
On the ground floor, you’ll find washing and ironing equipment, vintage toys, 18th- and 19th-century textiles, samplers, ‘Useful and Fine Handicrafts’, complete with a collection of silver sewing kits, folk art, and items relating to school and education. A cosy little farmhouse kitchen has been furnished with a nod to Staphorst, and in the laundry room the maid is doing the washing. Upstairs, a maternity room has been set up where there is much to see relating to birth, childbirth and babies as they were in days gone by, such as the midwife. The collection also includes christening garments, baby clothes, linen and rare medical instruments.

There is also a permanent exhibition of traditional costumes from many regions of the Netherlands, and a room displaying beautiful bonnets, ear ornaments, beadwork and silverware associated with these costumes.

A good cause, a good feeling
Museumhuisje 't Hoeske van opoe Iet is a non-profit museum dedicated to animal welfare. A visit to the museum evokes feelings of nostalgia in many people, and it’s fair to say that 99 per cent of visitors go home feeling good.
