Herebrug
Until the construction of the motorway and the Emma Viaduct in the 1960s, the Hereweg was one of the main access routes to the city. The Herebrug (1879) was therefore an important bridge in the city.

During the battle for liberation in April 1945, the bridge was severely damaged. A new bridge was therefore built in 1952. The bridge is made of concrete, clad in natural stone and brick. The coat of arms of Groningen – a double-headed eagle – is incorporated into the railing and the bridge keeper’s lodge. In addition, the artist Wladimir de Vries was commissioned to design a sculpture for the bridge. This took the form of a young woman holding ears of corn in her hands, with a reclining calf at her feet. The sculpture symbolises the bond between the city and the Ommelanden.
