Occo Reintiesheerd is of great scenic and heritage value. The large historic ‘head-neck-body’ farmhouse is situated on a high piece of former farmland. Furthermore, the farmhouse also holds value as the historical successor to a flat farmhouse located nearby, which is thought to have very ancient origins. The complex of mound settlements clearly demonstrates that this is a valuable ancient cultural landscape.

Due to gas extraction in Groningen, the farm has suffered earthquake damage. The last owners subsequently sold the farm to the NAM. The NAM then transferred the farm to Het Groninger Landschap in 2017. Thanks to this transfer, the farm’s heritage status is safeguarded.

Just as in the historic farmhouses De Haver and Melkema, the residential accommodation has been relocated to the barn. At Occo Reintiesheerd, the residential function is being accommodated in the farm’s side barn. In this way, Het Groninger Landschap is buying time so that, in a few years’ time, it can reassess the damaged front building.
