The site where the Spiekerhûs now stands has a remarkable history. Not so long ago, there was an old town farm here with barns and silos, part of the former agricultural estate owned by the municipality of Groningen in Ter Apel. What made this place special back then can still be felt today. The tranquillity of the surrounding countryside, the proximity of the centuries-old monastery wood and the space to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. These special qualities still form the foundation of the Spiekerhûs. Where agricultural life once took centre stage, a versatile meeting place has now emerged where history and modern possibilities come together.
