Nature park Tussen de Venen

On the former arable land, a mosaic of biotopes has been created with great wealth of flora and fauna. Excavated parts form pools and moors with species such as sundew and marshwort, where dragonflies and amphibians feel at home.

Grazing by sheep prevents forestation and preserves the open landscape; dogs are not allowed here.

More than 50 species of trees and shrubs have been planted in the area. In addition, ten special trees have been added as solitary specimens. These species disappeared from the Netherlands during the ice ages and have since failed to return independently. They include the amber tree, tulip tree and water nymph: trees that stand out because of their special shape and brilliant autumn colours.

In the southern, wooded part, landscaped hills and ploughed areas provide variation in height and nutrient richness. These more rugged areas attract numerous butterflies, such as lemon moth, little fox and sand moths.
