Kerk Zuurdijk

The church in Zuurdijk was built in the first half of the thirteenth century. The floor of gravestones in the central aisle has been preserved. Here, you can see the gravestones of members of well-known farming families from Zuurdijk.

Have a look now

During a major renovation in 1849, the small hall church lost much of its medieval character. In 1879, the church was also covered with a layer of cement plaster, thereby concealing the old architectural features from view on the exterior as well. The floor of gravestones in the central aisle has, however, been preserved. Here you can see the gravestones of members of well-known farming families from Zuurdijk. The gravestones on the south side of the church are also well worth a look. This is where the wealthy people of Zuurdijk used to be buried.

Next to the church stands a memorial stone for the ‘forgotten’ deceased; those who were too poor to afford a proper grave. They were buried on the poor side of the church, with at most a wooden cross on their grave. As the wood rotted away quickly, it is as if no one lies there. To commemorate these people, a memorial stone was erected in 2009.
