Molen Fortuna
The Molen Fortuna in Noordhorn is an old grain and husking mill. A landmark in the Groningen countryside.
Long before the current windmill on Schippersstraat in Noordhorn was built, there was already another windmill on this site. It is not known exactly when it was built, but there were references to a windmill at this location as early as 1774. In 1898, this mill was purchased by Klaas Homan and his wife Grietje de Boer. In 1890, they saw their worst nightmare come true: the mill burnt down completely. Against all advice to build an electric pumping station in order to compete more effectively, Homan decided to rebuild the mill. The current mill was erected that very same year. The Molen Fortuna is what is known as a grain and husking mill. This means that the mill can grind grain, but is also capable of husking barley and/or rice. For this purpose, it has two sets of millstones and two husking stones.

Nowadays, Molen Fortuna is mainly used for other purposes. For example, the mill is used for various events such as weddings, and activities regularly take place in and around the mill. There is also a permanent exhibition on the Battle of Noordhorn, where you can read all about the historical background to the battle and the role the mill played in it. The mill is also the starting point for a cycle route taking in the fortifications and mills in the Westerkwartier. All in all, there is plenty to see and do at Molen Fortuna .
The windmill is open from April to October.
