De Olifant fountain was created by artist Wladimir de Vries. The sculpture of de olifant carrying a little boy on its back is as old as De Wijert, the neighbourhood in which it stands. For many people, the De Wijert housing scheme, around 1960, represented a huge improvement in their living conditions. At the time, the artwork was a gift from the ‘Society for the Improvement of Housing Conditions’ to the Municipality of Groningen. In winter, De Olifant is kept in storage by the City Maintenance Department due to the risk of freezing.
