St Mary’s Church

St Mary’s Church is a fine example of late Romanesque architecture. The oldest part dates from the second half of the 13th century. The high, Gothic chancel dates from the 15th century. The tall windows were altered during the same period.

Both the exterior and interior are remarkable, featuring upper and lower zones, decorative niches and recessed panels. The interior is covered by domed vaults. The chancel features a piscina and a sacrament niche. Particularly beautiful are the 13th- and 16th-century murals depicting biblical figures and scenes. Right next to St Mary’s Church stands the freestanding gable-roofed tower, also dating from the 13th century, with a pointed ridge turret from the 17th century. The bells in the tower date from 1501 (Geert van Wou) and 1693 (G. Schimmel).

Organ
The organ was built in 1662, probably by the Huis brothers. Work on the organ was carried out by Hinsz, his partners Freijtag & Schnitger Jr. and Freijtag Jr. In 1907, the organ was refurbished by Doornbos and significantly adapted to the tastes of the time. In 1989–1990, the organ was restored by Bakker & Timmenga and returned to its original stop configuration. The organ has two manuals and an attached pedalboard, with a total of 16 stops, divided between the Hauptwerk (9 stops) and the Rugwerk (7 stops).
