The Changing Same

In the middle of the pond in front of the Duisenberg building at the Zernike complex stands the outline of an enormous human figure. The sculpture is six metres high and made of stainless steel. Within the outline of the sculpture, a powerful fountain shoots water upwards, making parts of the figure barely visible. The jet of water reaches to the top of the shoulder before dispersing into a dense mist. The title of the sculpture refers to ‘something that changes and yet remains the same’. The changing same symbolises the research carried out within the Faculty of Spatial Sciences. According to the artists Maree Blok and Bas Lugthart, the water from the fountain forms the backbone of the human figure and is a metaphor for humanity’s ability to continually change itself and its environment, without losing its sense of self.
