Schutsluis Ten Boer

The lock at Ten Boer lies on the border between the two (former) water boards, Hunsingo and Fivelingo. Nowadays, many goods are transported by lorry, but in the past this was mainly done by boat.

Water was therefore an important transport route. That is why a lock was built here in 1928. This allowed ships to pass through, despite the difference in water level between the drainage basins of the Reitdiep and Damsterdiep. Before the lock was built, there was a portage at the site of the bridge. This is a mechanism whereby a ship is pulled across land from one body of water to another. The lock made passage considerably easier. A distinctive feature of this lock is that the iron gates are not swung to the side, but are hoisted upwards using chains and pulleys. This type of lock construction is very rare in the Netherlands.
