Peace Treaty of Münster
Adriaan Clant (1599-1665) co-signed the Peace Treaty of Münster in 1648, he is at the front of the famous painting on the Peace of Münster by Gerard ter Borg, and his portrait hangs in the Peace Hall of the Münster Town Hall.

Had Adriaan Clant (1599-1665) not co-signed the 1648 Peace Treaty of Münster, he would have been just one of many anonymous Ommelander noblemen. He was allowed to do so, however, and now he is at the forefront of Gerard ter Borg's famous painting on the Peace of Münster, his portrait hangs in the Peace Hall of Münster's Town Hall amidst European luminaries and his remains rest in the beautiful, precious tomb designed by Rombout Verhulst in the church of Stedum.
Jonker Clant lives at the borg Nittersum in Stedum and leads normal squire's life there. At the peace negotiations in Münster between the Republic and Spain, he was lucky enough to be allowed to act on behalf of Stad and Lande. There was no major role for Stad and Lande and thus for Clant.

At the time, it was very common for 'gifts' to be exchanged back and forth to ensure smooth negotiations. Clant participated fully in this and, to put it in his Gronings, he did not lose out. For making too much of a mess even in the eyes of his contemporaries, he was threatened with recall. However, the tempest floats over and Clant gets his place in history.
