May days in Krewerd
There was not much fighting in the province of Groningen in the May days of 1940. However, Jan Teuben from Krewerd did have to take some soldiers from Nansum behind the Waterlinie in his lorry. He got caught up in the Battle of the Afsluitdijk and lost his truck in all the commotion.

A week later, Teuben decided to retrieve his car. It had by now been requisitioned by the Dutch army, but Teuben jumped in the car and drove back to Krewerd. He dared to do so because the Dutch military had "no slingshot to shoot at us yet". A few months later, Jan Teuben lost his truck again - this time to the Germans. They did have something more than a slingshot, so he left it at that this time.
