Molen De Vriendschap

The mill was probably built as a husking mill at the time. As the mill was used solely for husking barley, it lacks a stone loft.

In 1935, during the husking process, a rod broke in strong winds. In 1941, the husking stones were removed and used in the mechanical husking mill ‘De Vriendschap’ in Hoogezand. Subsequently, a pair of millstones was installed in the mill in place of the husking stones. However, the grinding seat is situated so far from the centre of the mill that the usual transmission from the spur gear (Groningen dialect: ‘takrad’) to the grinding spindle could not be achieved. An intermediate wheel was fitted; the millstones are now driven via a pinion wheel, an intermediate disc and a long spindle. Because of this unique intermediate wheel, the millstone rotates in the opposite direction.
