Location
In 1542, a new sea dyke was constructed to hold back the waters of the Dollard. The village of Nieuwolda developed along that dyke. Nieuwolda Church was not built until 1718. A tower was added to it in 1756. A notable feature is that the church tower is topped not by a cockerel, but by a mermaid. The mermaid symbolises the fact that the piece of land on which the church stands was once part of the sea. The Reformed Church in Nieuwolda can be visited with a village guide.
