Op Ewsum is a beautiful historic borg grounds and green project on the outskirts of Middelstum. You can walk and cycle freely here. Fruit and vegetables are grown, there is a flower garden, animals and a cosy tearoom. Plenty to experience! The Borg grounds with the distinctive Donjon have been restored to their original state with a greenhouse, historical garden, fruit wall and plant nursery. OpEwsum is part of Stichting WerkPro and offers a protected work environment for people who need it.

The Ewsum family was a family of powerful squatters; the first noble family in Groningen. Unfortunately, they were also pretty raucous fighters and ruthless rulers. So in the 13th century, their castle near Middelstum was destroyed by the Groningers. They built a new borg named Ewsum, but it too suffered badly under the eternal struggle between the Groningers and the Ewsum family. Borg Ewsum was demolished in 1863. Only the gun turret from 1472 and one of the treasure houses remain. Using old data and drawings, the entire borg grounds have been restored to their former glory. A visit to the grounds shows, among other things, how people gardened three hundred years ago. Later, descendants of the Ewsum family also founded the borg Nienoord in Leek.
