Complete tranquillity, living in the heart of nature, where land and sea are almost one – it will be an experience you won’t soon forget.
On the one hand, the vast Westpolder with its beautiful vistas; on the other, the rugged sea dyke, behind which lies the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site with its salt marshes, mudflats and, in the distance, Schiermonnikoog. Early in the morning, you can watch the sun rise over the countryside and, in the evening, see it set over the mudflats. The starry night sky will both fascinate and impress you. You can walk and cycle to your heart’s content. National Park Lauwersmeer is just round the corner, and the ‘old’ Groningen countryside is also ideal for wonderful cycle rides. You can cycle straight from home, along the dyke to Lauwersoog, the home port of the Zoutkamp shrimp fishermen. There is plenty to see in the surrounding area: the authentic Hogeland villages with their medieval churches and windmills, Verhildersum Manor in Leens, the seal sanctuary in Pieterburen, and de theefabriek in Houwerzijl, to name but a few. The city of Groningen is 35 km away, and you can also reach Dokkum in Friesland in no time. Birds are present in great numbers and variety. More than 10 per cent of the ringed plovers, redshanks, black-headed gulls, common terns and Arctic terns that breed in the Netherlands can be found here. As many as 50 per cent of the avocets breed on the salt marshes. And don’t forget the impressive numbers of geese!! In short: a paradise for birdwatchers. In the cottage, there’s a notebook where our guests can jot down which birds they’ve spotted! The cottage, which was once home to the herdsman looking after the sheep grazing on the dykes and salt marshes, and later to the keeper of the nearby duck decoy, has been completely renovated and is equipped with all modern conveniences. And ......... who knows .......... one day the roe deer might pop round to see who’s living in the cottage now.
