Waterfall Forest on the Houwingaham
South of Bad Nieuweschans is the Bos op de Houwingaham, managed by Staatsbosbeheer. It was created in 1998-1999 to combine water storage, new nature and recreation. The area consists of deciduous forest, wet zones and a pond connected to the Westerwoldse Aa.
Footpaths and a cycle path run through the forest from the Hamdijk to Bad Nieuweschans, partly over a dike and part of the LF 9 NAP route.
The name recalls the vanished medieval village of Houwingaham, which was once swallowed by the Dollard. During construction, even remnants of old houses emerged under a clay cover.
