Abel Tasman Museum

Find out more about the life and voyages of the famous navigator Abel Tasman in his home village of Lutjegast.

Take a closer look

In this museum, you’ll set off on an expedition with Abel Tasman. You’ll learn more about the region where he was born, and the contemporary links with the cultures of the islands and mainland countries that Tasman visited. The history of land and sea, and of the northern and southern hemispheres, come together here. The key question is: what does this history mean for our actions today? There’s a fascinating story behind every museum exhibit. The enthusiastic volunteers here will be happy to tell you more about them.

There is also plenty for children to discover. For example, they can try out various musical instruments, imagine what it’s like to spend months sailing on a ship, or stroke a kiwi soft toy.
