According to the stories, Saint Walfridus lived in Bedum before he was murdered by the Normans. That is why the Walfriduskerk was built in the village in the 11th century. Initially, the church was dedicated to Mary and Paul, but Saint Walfridus himself soon became the church’s patron saint. Today, the church is best known for its leaning tower. The difference between the top and bottom is no less than 2.61 metres, which means the tower leans 4.2 degrees from the vertical. That’s even more leaning than the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, which leans ‘only’ 3.19 degrees from the vertical. So you no longer need to travel all the way to Italy for that classic ‘pushing the tower’ photo – you can simply pop over to Bedum!
