Whether you live in Oldambt, close to it or you come from afar to spend a few days in the north-east of our country in search of history, come and experience a different time.

You can wander around our medieval gardens and taste a special atmosphere. The gardens of De Cleyne Hortus are freely accessible and will surprise you. The gardens are based on a Benedictine monastery from the Middle Ages with a courtyard surrounded by a green cloister. All the other gardens are connected to it. These are a medicinal herb garden, a vegetable garden, a private garden, a grape garden, a small orchard and an Arabian heavenly garden.

Welcome to The Middle Ages Oldambt. With us you can enjoy special medieval gardens with tea garden of our foundation De Cleyne Hortus. Whether you live in Oldambt, close to it or you come from afar to spend a few days in the north-east of our country in search of history, come and experience a different time.

You can wander around our medieval gardens and taste a special atmosphere. The gardens of De Cleyne Hortus are freely accessible and will surprise you. In the tea garden of De Cleyne Hortus, you can enjoy various types of coffee and tea and different kinds of pastries, including medieval cakes. You can also choose various soft drinks, including moi, an original Groningen soft drink.

During the winter months, we at De Middeleeuwen Oldambt organise fully catered medieval meals in a homely atmosphere and we also publish books.

Opening hours

  • The gardens and tea garden of The Cleyne Hortus are open annually from mid-May to mid-September on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 6pm. For medieval meals, you can visit The Middle Ages Oldambt during the months of November, December, January and February. Meals are served in a homely atmosphere for one company of 4 to 10 people and take place by appointment only. You can order books on the Middle Ages here all year round.
