Take a closer look

A stone's throw from the city you will find one of the most beautiful late Romanesque churches in Town and Countryside. The School Church is a 13th-century brick church, with 16th-century vault paintings. Initially, only a large heavy, austere tower stood here. In the second half of the 13th century, a Romano-Gothic cruciform church was added. This church was much larger than the building that still stands today. The wall remains of the old outline are still visible here. Inside the church, you can see unusual vault paintings, which were done around 1520. When the church passed into Protestant hands in 1594, almost everything reminiscent of Catholic worship was removed. The paintings disappeared under a layer of lime. During a restoration in the 1940s, they reappeared. The vaults include depictions of the feasts of Christmas and Easter.
