't Roegwold

Reed and water play the leading role in 't Roegwold, which runs from Kolham past Slochteren and Schildwolde to the Schildmeer. Here you will find the exciting Knuppelpad, lots of birds, the blue moor frog, plenty of water and reed but above all: peace and space.

Take a closer look

't Roegwold is a wonderful area for walking or cycling, and very popular with birdwatchers. In the waving culms, the bluethroat, the bearded reedling and the reed bunting hide, and sometimes even the white-tailed eagle or flamingos! In the middle of the area is the Knuppelpad, perhaps the most photographed plank path in Groningen. The exciting plank path runs straight through the Dannemeer. All around you can hear the birds, which have found a safe haven on the nesting islands. The Knuppelpad is on Dannemeerweg. You can only enter this road from the Schildwolderdijk in Schildwolde.

Walking and cycling

If you want to discover the whole of 't Roegwold, walk 't Roege Pad. This consists of four long walking routes of up to 23 km. through all the subareas of 't Roegwold. Along the way, you will encounter beautiful nature and lots of birds. The map of 't Roege pad also shows ten Roege Rondjes, which are somewhat shorter routes of 2 to 10 km. Via the cycle junctions, you can map out your own route through 't Roegwold. A round around the Schildmeer for instance, or around the Dannemeer. Every year in August, the Roegwoldtocht is held, a pleasant cycling event through the entire area. In the second weekend of September, you cycle from concert to concert during Festival Roeg Klassiek. After your cycling or walking tour, you can enjoy views over the Schildmeer on the terrace of Kaap Steendam .

Subareas

't Roegwold consists of five subareas, each with its own unique characteristics. Seen from the city of Groningen, you first enter the Westerpolder. An open landscape where you are sure to encounter grazing Hereford cows. In spring, you can hear the cheerful song of the skylark. Want a view from on high? Then climb the viewing tower!

From the small village of Woudbloem, you can take beautiful walks through Ae's Woudbloem. Here you will find a very varied landscape with water, reed land, swamp forest and grassland, partly formed by the former flow fields of potato flour factory De Woudbloem. The Forestry Commission has set out a couple of 'rowdy' routes on unpaved paths. The blue post route towards Devil's Island and the yellow post route are highly recommended. The former potato starch factory De Woudbloem is a cultural venue in summer.

In the heart of 't Roegwold lies the Dannemeer. Former farmland has given way to a large lake. It is an eldorado for many bird species such as the hen harrier, common teal and snipe. Be sure to bring your binoculars to see spoonbills wading through the water.

Above the Schildmeer is Groningen's largest reed marsh: Tetjehorn, where bird species such as the bittern, bearded reedling and spotted crake feel completely at home. During your walk along the Schildmeer , you will come across De Vogelluisteraar, a work of art that allows you to listen to birdsong, both from the water and from the reeds.

Below the Schildmeer lies Haansvaart, the last completed area in 't Roegwold. It is a lovely area for a walk, along the Schildmeer, the lock or on the plank path right through the reed beds. From an elevation you can look out over the grasslands where many meadow birds live.
