Huis de Beurs is a Groningen take on the Central European tradition of the traditional coffee house. A coffee house is an old-fashioned term for a café that is open during the day and where, above all, good coffee, delicious pastries and light alcoholic drinks are served. It is the place where farmers, townspeople and country folk meet. It is the world of daily hustle and bustle, of trade, culture and politics. It is the place where people meet, whether by chance or not, in a pleasant atmosphere. To see and be seen. The regulars read their newspapers there every day. People write, think, compose poetry and work. It’s a place to stretch one’s legs for a while. People arrange to meet there. Tablets are brought to the table and laptops are opened. Market traders pop in for their coffee and students meet up there before or after their lectures. And all those passers-by – they certainly live up to their name. Meanwhile, a pianist from the conservatoire is tackling Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto. In short, Huis de Beurs is a smart, middle-class establishment, at any time of day, catering to a very wide audience.

It can be described as stylish, timeless and warm. The atmosphere is truly special. The light streaming through the large windows, filtered by the awnings, contributes to this. Many artists have been inspired by this unique light to create a sketch, a watercolour or a painting. The long, narrow terrace on Folkingestraat offers our guests exactly what a terrace is all about, but it also provides a marvellous view of the lively street bustle and the often hilarious, bizarre hustle and bustle at the junction with the A-Kerkhof and the Vismarkt.
