St Mary’s Church
Westerwijtwerd is mentioned in a monastic register from the early tenth century as ‘Widuvurd’. The name later evolved into Wietwerd, which eventually became Westerwijtwerd.

The distinguished van Ewsum family built a church here, dedicated to Mary. People came to live around the church. Therefore, the fact that the village exists is entirely due to faith. Both the church and the tower were built in the mid-thirteenth century, but its character is mainly determined by the nineteenth century. The furnishings with the pulpit against the east wall and the pews oriented to it clearly come from that period. The most valuable part of the inventory is the late Gothic ironwork that was later reused for the bulkhead work between portal. These fittings are among the finest in the province.
The north wall depicts two camp fighters. The small tuft of hair of both fighters indicates a noble origin. The shorter the hair around the tuft, the higher the descent .
