Het Calmershuis
This stately home has seen a lot of tumultuous times. Built around 1250, it is one of the city's oldest stone houses.

By the standards of the time, this was a gigantic structure. Its construction therefore took many years. The property owes its name to its owners in 1338: mayor's family Calmer. In 1920, the house was sold to Wolters publishers, after which it became part of the Wolters-Noordhoff complex. A few years after the departure of this publisher, het Calmershuis became a squatters' stronghold. In 1990, the building was the centre of squatters' riots, during which it was evacuated. Today, the building houses the Open University.
