Coendersborg

Coendersborg originated from the three manors (farms) Fossema, Harckema and Heringa. The farms eventually came into the possession of Ludolf Coender, councillor in Groningen, in 1668.

He had the Fossemaheerd converted into a borg. The house was owned by the Teyens family from 1699 to 1866. They had the current borg built in 1813. Near the borg is 't Pad: an old path between Marum and Tolbert that dates back to the Middle Ages. It is one of the oldest paths in the Netherlands. The Coendersborg was sold to the Het Groninger Landschap foundation in 1956. The borg itself cannot be visited, but the forest behind it is accessible to visitors. The barn of the borg also houses a museum with old agricultural tools: 't Rieuw.
