De grote verscheuring
This sculpture was created by Pierluca Degli Innocenti, an artist of Italian origin who had lived in France since 1960. An area torn apart in those years by the tragedy of the Algerian war.

His dismay at this is clearly reflected in this sculpture. It consists of a large chunk of bronze torn open, as if by a tremendous internal explosion. 'De grote verscheuring' is part of a series of sculptures and is a copy of an aluminium specimen that was shown at an exhibition in the Keukenhof in 1965. There, this sculpture was purchased by student association Vindicat Atque Polit. It donated the sculpture, in honour of its 150th anniversary, to the city of Groningen.
