The 25-metre-high tower in the Diepster forest was opened in October 2022 as the highlight of the Rondje Lauwersmeer project. The tower can be seen as two separate towers linked together. The part in the forest is green and the part on the lake side has brown-coloured corten steel panels. One way to reach the tower is via the experience route created through the forest. Besides enjoying special views in the tower, you can also learn a lot here. The educational information panels teach you all about the unique National Park Lauwersmeer. You will learn all about the themes of Wad and Forest. While you look out over the rugged reed beds, the Lauwersmeer and, on a clear day, also Schiermonnikoog, lots of birds fly by. In and around the Diepsterbos, species such as the cormorant, the bearded reedling and the marsh harrier regularly bivouac. With a bit of luck, you might even see the white-tailed eagle!
National Park Lauwersmeer
When the Lauwerszee was closed off from the Waddenzee in 1969, the Lauwersmeer was created. At the time, nobody could have predicted that the Lauwersmeer area would become one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the Netherlands. This combination of vistas of the horizon, magnificent flora and fauna and so much space for recreation cannot be found anywhere else.
