Hervormde kerk Blijham

The fact that the Reformed Church in Blijham still stands today is nothing short of a miracle. The church has, in fact, had a rather turbulent history.

Take a closer look

In 1781, a dispute arose over the appointment of a new schoolmaster. This dispute got so out of hand that it led to a village riot in which the church was seriously damaged. So much so, in fact, that it was decided to demolish the old church (presumably built in the 16th century) and replace it with a new church in 1783. In 1872, a tower was added to the nieuwe kerk . But the nieuwe kerk , too, suffered greatly. In 1941, a British aeroplane crashed, causing serious damage to the tower. Following this accident, the church was restored in several phases between 1963 and 2001. The restoration was completed on 20 May 2003 with the reinstallation of the weathercock.
