Maria Church

St Mary's Church is a fine example of late Romanesque construction. The oldest part dates from the second half of the 13th century. The high, Gothic choir from the 15th century. The tall windows were modified at the same time.

Take a closer look

Both exterior and interior are unusual with upper and lower zones, ornamental niches and sparse fields. The interior is covered with domed vaults. A piscina and sacrament niche can be seen in the choir. Particularly beautiful are the 13th- and 16th-century murals with Biblical figures and scenes. Right next to the Marian church is the also 13th-century freestanding gabled tower with a pointed roof spire from the 17th century. The swinging bells in the tower are from 1501 (Geert van Wou) and 1693 (G. Schimmel).

Organ
The organ was built in 1662, probably by the Huis brothers. The organ was worked on by Hinsz, the partners Freijtag & Schnitger jr. and Freijtag jr. In 1907, the organ was renewed by Doornbos and considerably adapted to the taste of the time. In the years 1989-1990, the organ was restored by Bakker & Timmenga and returned to its original disposition. The organ has 2 manuals and a suspended pedal with a total of 16 stops, divided into 9 main divisions and 7 rugwerk stops.
