Fights in Holwierde

Holwierde was ravaged by incessant gunfire between 23 and 29 April 1945. Indeed, the German battery commander had given the orders: "Holwierde bis zum letzten Mann verteidigen". And that happened.

The German troops had no intention of surrendering even though they were surrounded from two sides. Residents had to stay in cellars and other shelters for almost a week. During the heavy shelling, almost no building remained undamaged and many soldiers as well as civilians lost their lives.
