Wilkensfontein
Ubbo Wilkens (1865–1921) served as mayor of Veendam on two occasions: from 1907 to 1910, and in 1920 and 1921.

As a councillor, he campaigned for Veendam to be connected to the provincial water supply network. It was only after his death that this wish was realised. In 1934, the year Veendam was connected to the water supply network, a fountain was erected using funds from Wilkens’s bequest.
