Molen de Lelie
De Lelie windmill is a striking feature of the Eenrum landscape, not least because of its height of almost 35 metres. Only the historic church tower in Eenrum is taller.

The windmill was built in 1862. At that time, there were still two other windmills on Molenstraat. That is why the Lelie used to be known as the ‘Veurste Meuln’. The mill remained in operation until 1954. That year, a storm was so violent that the sails of the Lelie spun out of control. They were spinning so fast that the mechanism was in danger of overheating, which could have caused the mill to catch fire. This was narrowly averted, but the sheer force caused the (extremely heavy) millstones to come loose and smash right through the mill’s walls. The mill was repaired after the storm, but had to be restored again in 1980. Afterwards, the mill was operated by volunteer millers. In the mid-1990s, the mill’s cap was repaired once more. Today, the mill is owned by the Stichting Het Groninger Landschap.
Opening hours
- Molen De Lelie is open every Saturday during the operating season (late April to late September) from 1.00 pm to 5.00 pm. In July and August, it is also open on Wednesday afternoons (also from 1.00 pm to 5.00 pm).
