In 1990, the city of Groningen celebrated its 950th anniversary. To mark this occasion, a contemporary city gate was erected along each of the city’s main access roads. Architect Daniel Libeskind designed these city gates. City landmark S03 on Rozenburglaan is a forest of slanted posts with a wedge approximately eight metres high. The artwork represents an open book featuring paintings of fragments from the city’s history. Through this, the artist aims to express that the city’s history is written by its own inhabitants. The paintings on the artwork were created by artists from Groningen.
