Cultural routes in Midden-Groningen

These cultural routes through Midden-Groningen take you to beautiful churches, past turning mills and on an exploratory expedition of the Veenkoloniën peat district. You can walk, cycle or travel by boat and learn all about the stories behind each themed route.

‘Op pad met Piccardt’ (25 km.)

This bicycle route takes in all the places where flamboyant Henric Piccardt – the former lord of the Fraeylemaborg – lived, worked and was buried.

‘Aan loop mit K. ter Laan’ (4/8 km)

K. ter Laan, born in Slochteren, was very passionate about the Groningen language and is known for his thick ‘Nieuw Groninger Woordenboek’ dictionary. In conjunction with Olaf Vos, Ontdek Midden-Groningen has set out a lovely walk around Slochteren.

‘Langs de mooiste kerken’ (52 km)

Groningen is known for its well-preserved churches. This bicycle route leads you through the entire municipality, from the beautiful white church in Westerbroek, the impressive cruciform church of Noordbroek and the Koepelkerk domed church in Sappemeer.

‘Ommetje Windlust’ (10 km)

This is a beautiful walk or bicycle ride from the Windlust mill in Overschild to ’t Roegwold scenic area, which provides lovely view from the watchtower over Groningen’s vast reed marsh.

‘Ode aan de molen’ (47 km)

Where would Groningen be without its mills? This ode to the mill route takes in eight beautiful polder draining-mills and flour mills. They are regularly operated during weekends and are open to visitors.

‘Varen door de veenkoloniën’ (20/27 km, also suitable as a bicycle route)

The village of Kiel-Windeweer is a beautiful protected rural area with clear traces of its initial foundation and the history of a peat district settlement. Take in the historic bridges and farms along the water as you cycle or sail to the Zuidlaardermeer Lake.

‘Van Faber naar de sluis’ (3.5 km)

With plenty of life around the locks, Hoogezand and Martenshoek have a rich history in the areas of shipping and shipbuilding. This walk takes in the historic ribbon construction from the well-known Hotel Faber up to the Sluiskade.
