Sint-Jozefkathedraal

The southeast side of the city was chosen for the location of this second Catholic church in the city (the first was St Martin's). Here, a neighbourhood was just under construction(de Oosterpoort), especially for workers.

This is also why the church was named after St Joseph, the carpenter and patron saint of workers. The church was designed by P.J.H. Cuypers. He created an elegant neo-Gothic structure with a tall, slender tower. The interior was initially quite austere. At its consecration in 1887, the walls were whitewashed with only a few decorations. Thanks to donations, the décor became increasingly elaborate over time. For example, the window panes were replaced with stained glass and bells were installed in the tower. The tower is nicknamed the ‘drunkard’s tower’, because its hexagonal shape means that two bells are visible from every angle. Incidentally, the official name of the church is the Cathedral of Saints Martin and Joseph.
