Route 37: Veendiep, Bellingwolde - Vriescheloo
On this route, you’ll walk along the Veendiep between Bellingwolde and Vriescheloo. This route is 11 kilometres long.
The Veendiep is a canalised stream to the south-west of Bellingwolde, which forms the link between the Westerwoldse Aa and the B.L. Tijdenskanaal. Together with the associated lakes – created by sand extraction for road construction, including the Rhederweg – and the nearby woodland, the Veendiep forms a nature reserve which has been given the same name as the canal: the Veendiep. Following its redevelopment by the local council, the Veendiep was transferred to the Hunze en Aa’s Water Board. The lake area itself forms part of the National Ecological Network and is managed by Staatsbosbeheer. Anyone walking there will experience a welcome change of scenery: rugged vegetation on the dry, barren soil, deciduous woodland alongside it and marsh plants on the banks of the ponds.
