Welcome to Zoutkamp, a village with a maritime history you can see, smell and taste. Walk through the streets and along the harbour and discover how this fishing village developed into a lively village with a rich fishing tradition since the 15th century.

Welcome to Zoutkamp, a village with a rich history that can still be felt in the streets, the harbour and the smell of freshly baked fish. Walk through this fishing village and discover how Zoutkamp has developed over the centuries.

Zoutkamp was once located directly on the Lauwerszee. In the 15th century, the salt trade flourished here, and in 1576 Spanish soldiers built a fortress entrenchment that still defines the structure of the village. In the late 17th century, the first fishermen settled here, and Zoutkamp grew into a thriving fishing village with a fleet of as many as 60 cutters.

Major changes came with the closure of the Reitdiep in 1877 and later the Lauwerszee in 1969, causing many fishermen to move their home port to Lauwersoog. Yet the fishing tradition remains alive and kicking. On this walk, you will see, smell and taste maritime history on every street corner.
