Put on your sturdy shoes and stap into nature. Hiking through Appelbergen gives you a taste of the area's history. The preshitorian pingoruins, crater lakes with meltwater, are a nod to the last ice age. Or how about the deep gullies in the field. These are medieval cart tracks. The wind had free rein for years, blowing the loose sand into the still-visible sand hills. This is where the name 'mountains' comes from. The first part, 'Appel', officially refers to the many pine cones. But we Groningers prefer to stress the 'e' instead of the 'a', because the wooded area used to be a military training ground.
