Hiking trail Appelbergen
Put on your sturdy shoes and stap into nature. As you walk through Appelbergen , you’ll get a taste of the area’s history. The prehistoric pingo ruins – small crater lakes filled with meltwater – are a reminder of the last ice age. Or how about the deep ruts in the fields? These are medieval cart tracks. For years, the wind had free rein, blowing the loose sand into the little sand hills that are still visible today. This is where the name ‘bergen’ comes from. The first section, ‘Appel’, officially refers to the many pine cones. But we Groningen locals prefer to emphasise the ‘e’ rather than the ‘a’, because this wooded area used to be a military training ground. It’s a well-established habit.
This walking route follows the yellow posts scattered throughout the area and takes you from woodland to grassland. The video and photos below will inspire you to set off.
