Oude Ebbingestraat 53 - This independent bookshop has been a household name in the city for almost 80 years. You spot the shop from afar because of its iconic and colourful awning. Inside, you'll find a unique collection of bestsellers and quirky books, including a large collection of German literature. The back section offers 'Groningana' and books in Grunniger Toal. Behind the shop is a reading garden as an oasis of calm in the middle of the city. Walter's Bookshop, its English-speaking brother, specialises in English fiction and non-fiction, with an assortment of local designs such as postcards and posters.

H.Witting & Son

Oosterstraat 51 - The oldest shop in town is hat and cap shop H. Witting & Zn. This specialist shop has been a household name in the city and province of Groningen for over 145 years. No wonder hat lovers from far beyond the province also know how to find their way to this special shop. This small historical museum still has old shop windows, an antique cash register from the early days of the shop, an authentic play bridge from shipbuilding and, of course, headwear.
