Asparagus - the white gold

Growing asparagus is easy in Midden-Groningen

"The secret of picking asparagus? That's love!", says Anton Grol of Grol Asperges in Tripscompagnie. His father started growing in 1992. "For this region it was something new and on the sandy soil you turned out to be able to grow asparagus just fine. Every year, lovers know how to find us because the asparagus here is super fresh." The white gold is well cared for. "We sell only the very best asparagus and at night a wet tea towel goes over the stock that has been cut."

While cycling through Zuidbroek and Noordbroek, you will see beautiful farms. At farm shop Meinardi in Noordbroek, you will also find plenty of home-grown asparagus. Go for loose asparagus and make your own dish or choose the convenience of a ready-made asparagus dish or asparagus soup.

Plenty of asparagus on the menu

Would you rather eat at a restaurant? Asparagus is on the menu at, among others, Hotel Restaurant Faber, Restaurant De Gouden Zon and Van der Valk Hotel Westerbroek and Zuidbroek. Frank Faber of Hotel Restaurant Faber notices that people crave the white gold right at the start of the season and he responds to this. "Our asparagus comes from the Groningen land and we put together a complete asparagus dinner with it, nice and classic with ham and egg or just a little bit different with salmon." You can also fully enjoy asparagus at lunch, in the sunshine and out of the wind on the terrace.
