Easter really gets spring going. A long weekend that calls for getting outside, going out together and planning something fun. There's plenty to choose from in Groningen then, from cosy markets and activities for kids to a brisk walk outside or a place to have aan tafel together.

Flower fair

3 April - Every year just before the long Easter weekend, Groningen turns into a flower paradise. This colourful tradition, which takes place on Good Friday, brings hundreds of flowers and plants to the city centre. In places such as Oude Ebbingestraat, Grote Markt, Nieuwe Markt and A-Kerkhof, there are countless stalls full of beautiful houseplants, fresh cut flowers, seeds and garden tools. Walk through the garden of Veenborg Welgelegen

4 April - Spring is coming and nature is waking up. A great way to experience this is during a walk through the garden of Veenborg Welgelegen in Sappemeer. On Saturday 4 April, together with a guide, you will discover the special garden behind the borg, which was redesigned in 2022. In early spring, the first Börgbloumkes, the Groningen name for stately plants, appear here. During the walk, you will learn more about the history of the borg and look for early flowering plants such as snowdrops and crocuses.

Spring walks

The Easter weekend is a great time to discover nature in Groningen. Put on your walking shoes and enjoy the fresh spring air and blossoming landscapes. In De Heemtuin you walk through a special nature area of about 50 hectares with paths along water, bridges and many different plants and animals. 't Roegwold is also ideal for a quiet spring walk, with an open landscape, reed beds and the 750-metre long wooden plank path right through the area. At the edge of the province is the Dollard, where fresh and salt water meet. Walk on the dike along the salt marshes and enjoy the wide views. Especially in spring, this area is a paradise for birdwatchers.

Rare Beauty Market

6 April - On Easter Monday, the Vismarkt turns into a place where you can hunt for the most beautiful things during the Zeldzaam Mooi Markt. With as many as 100 market stalls and various staging areas, you will discover rare products from local and regional makers. From handmade jewellery and illustrations to self-designed items and artisanal (organic) delicacies, everything is made with care and craftsmanship. Meanwhile, bubble-blowing artist Frans van de Kamp lets impressive mega soap bubbles float through the air.

Easter egg hunt on Ennemaborg country estate

6 April - The Easter bunny has hidden his eggs so well that you will need a GPS to find them all. In small groups of 5 to 7 people, you set off along various locations on the estate. With each egg found, you will receive a code and whoever collects all codes will discover the end point. A fun and active way to spend Easter in nature and with a bit of puzzle solving.

Easter treasure hunt on the Bourtangerveld

6 April - On Easter Monday, young adventurers can go on an exciting Easter treasure hunt in the Bourtangerveld. Together with guides from Het Groninger Landschap, you will search for eggs, tracks and other surprises in nature. Who do the eggs belong to? The treasure hunt starts at Museum Terra Mora in de fort of Bourtange. From there, you head into the nature reserve for an exploration along unpaved paths. Put on sturdy shoes and go on an adventure together.

Easter activities in Winsum

6 April - At Easter there is plenty to do in Winsum. Cosy activities are organised on the Dorpsplein, in the middle of the village. For example, try neutenschaiten, a traditional game in which you slide a wooden disc as far as possible over a plank. You can also participate in egg tossing and catching or horseshoe throwing. For children, there is an exciting Easter egg hunt with colourful eggs hidden all over the square. Whether you participate or prefer to watch, the Dorpsplein in Winsum will be a pleasant afternoon for young and old.

Naturally, Easter starts with a delicious brunch. There are plenty of places in Groningen during the Easter weekend where you can sit down to a sumptuous brunch.

De Theefabriek - On Easter Sunday you can enjoy an extensive Easter brunch with freshly baked bread and rich fillings, perfectly combined with a cup of tea or a glass of orange juice. Afterwards, you can visit the tea museum or browse around the tea shop. Those who want to go outside for a while can then continue to Activiteitencentrum Lauwersnest for a walk.
